Colin Higgins or ‘Higgy’ as he is known throughout the western hemisphere, or at least North-West Somerset, came to talk to the Garden Club on Tuesday May 12th and his subject was ‘Garden ponds and features for wildlife’. Early on in his talk he gave the dimensions of a body of water which can be defined as a pond. Subsequent research has been unproductive in terms of finding this precise mathematical information as to the measurements involved and obviously no copious notes were taken at the time, so it might have to be accepted that a pond is a small lake or a big puddle which holds water for at least 4 months of the year and is sufficiently shallow to allow sunlight to reach the bottom!
‘Higgy’ had some wonderful photographs of flora and fauna and admirable enthusiasm and knowledge. His recommendations about where and how ponds should be created left many members sadly shaking their heads and acknowledging that their own small lakes were in the wrong place and too shallow, or too deep, and that an onerous amount of remedial action needed to be done and as quickly as possible!
