May 2025

At the Gardening Club meeting on Tuesday 13th May Amelia, the arboriculturalist from Amesbury, amazed all with her knowledge and enthusiasm about trees. All sorts of trees from giant redwoods to more modest bonsais and everything in between. Her passion was obvious and contagious, and she gave us 90 minutes of invaluable advice.

Amongst the trees mentioned as being of consideration for smaller gardens were the Cockspur Hawthorn, Japanese Apricot, Katsura, Chinese Dogwood, Amelanchier, Persian Ironwood and Acer Triflorum. However, Amelia put huge emphasis on preparation before planting and care afterwards extending throughout the life of the tree. Staking, watering, feeding, mulching and pruning are all essential for a happy tree rather than just an existing tree.

Amelia’s secateurs were the Okatsune 103 pruners and are available from Amazon and other retailers from around £35.
